The Sundarbans mangrove forest covers an area of about 10,277 km2 (3,968 sq mi), of which forests in Bangladesh’s Khulna Division extend over 6,017 km2 (2,323 sq mi) and in West Bengal’s Presidency division, they extend over 4,260 km2 (1,640 sq mi) across the South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts.
The Sundarbans is home to over 100 Bengal tigers, one of the largest single populations of tigers in one area.
The mangrove ecosystem of the Sundarbans is considered to be unique because of its immensely rich mangrove flora and mangrove-associated fauna. Some 78 species of mangroves have been recorded in the area making it the richest mangrove forest in the world.
Sundarban is the home of more than 300 species of plants,among them some are true mangroves, namely: Kalo Baine(Avicennia alba) Peara Baine (Avicennia marina) Jat Baine(Avicennia officinalis)
As per the District Human Development Report for the South 24 Parganas, the Sundarbans area, in the southern part of the erstwhile 24 Parganas district, includes 102 deltaic islands, out of which 54 are inhabited and the rest is reserved forest.
Tigers can run up to 40 miles per hour. Tigers are excellent swimmers and have been recorded to swim up to seven miles in a single day.
