Dubai began to thrive remarkably under the Al Maktoum leadership, with its economy heavily reliant on fishing and pearl diving, as well as boat building. The invention of artificial pearls in the 1950s in Japan brought a financial downturn. But it didn’t last long. In 1966, the discovery of oil kickstarted a new era, setting Dubai on a path to become the global city that we know today.
